new house addition construction page

This is the home page of the house addition project

The garage doors are now fitted. I have run an extension lead out to operate the opener - all working fine and looking great! Gary and Mike worked today on the back garage door and clearing the area... I finished all of the framing in the old garage (with the exception of the wall between the closet and the bathroom). Everything is ready to be sheetrocked on the corridor side - I may get some on Monday, time permitting...

The front door to the garage and the windows are now fitted with the exception of the big feature window and french doors on the second floor. I removed the old garage doors to make room for framing the opening tomorrow . The new garage doors will be fitted to their new location on Saturday morning...

I started to frame out the old garage today to make a new bedroom and bathroom for Lee. My first attempt at framing let along using a nail gun but aside from the odd bent nail here and there, it's all standing and looking good so far...

Half the roof is on and the rest has tarp on it - looking good so far. The other half may be tackled tomorrow depending on good old New England weather...

I decided to remove the siding and facia from the old garage door - it was a bit of a shock to find that most of the supports had been eaten away by carpenter ants... at least this whole area is to be ripped out and rebuilt...

All the walls are now in place on the second floor, the scissor trusses for the roof have been lifted up into position ready to be nailed in place tomorrow. The cladding has also been delivered and will also be installed tomorrow, weather permitting. There is a couple of inches of snow forcast for tonight but hopefully that won't hold things up...

The first floor now has walls... next lot of lumber has been delivered and stacked on top ready for the 2nd floor framing to start tomorrow. Should be in a position to start roofing on Thursday if the snow holds off enough. It's been bitterly cold today - temps down to 8 degs with a biting wind...

The subfloor is now laid, so we have a ceiling on the garage and a floor upstairs!! All we need now are the walls for the first floor and a roof... this should start on Tuesday after the next lot of lumber is delivered. Watch this space...

Well... I found out what to do with all the spruce trees... pay someone $700 to chip them :( more expense... The trees were all gone by 9:30 this morning... also have a load of 1.5" crushed stone being delivered, this will be leveled out and a new drain put in today ready for the driveway to be paved on Monday...

Slab was poured this morning... Also took down about 25 spruce trees that was blocking out the light from the hardwood trees in the forest. It looks a lot clearer now and with some more backfill arriving in the next couple of days and the driveway being repaved on Monday, it's looking good. Now... just have to find out what to do with 25 felled spruce trees...

It's been a bit of an epic week in so far as nothing happened - diddly squat to be exact... I happy to say though that work has resumed today after we were let down by the originally booked foundation guys. Todays work is setting the forms and pouring in the footings.

What was expected to be finished yesterday rolled into today - lots of big rocks to clear and the digger broke a tooth (poor thing)... foundation was completely dug by noon, just waiting for the building inspector to come out and check out some underlying rocks.

Excavator is now working in the pool construction area, digging out the stumps and moving the large rocks next to the brook to form a wall that will be the boundary of the new pool. click here for photos

Excavator has arrived and replaced the driveway outside the garage with a 4 foot hole! Lots of rock to clear away... maybe make some use of it during the pool construction...

Work about to start tomorrow. Clearing debris around the site and removing trees seems to be the nature of the game at the moment.
